Paintings from Weslaco, Texas

Pablo Peña

Color is the subject. Skies on fire, rivers that keep faces, and currents of paint that never sit still.

Red Snapper

Pablo's new Red Snapper series is made with gyotaku, the Japanese art of printing straight from a real fish. Every scale, fin and gill leaves its own mark, then color takes over.

The series will be on view at Sidebar RGV in Edinburg. Come meet the artist and see the work in person, where the texture does things a screen can't. If a piece stays with you, ask about bringing it home.

Two ways of seeing

Dreamscapes

Surreal landscapes where suns melt into rivers, trees drip color, and a second moon is always rising. Look long enough and something looks back.

    Currents

Abstracts made of a single motion repeated until it turns into weather. Each one lives inside one color family, from violet to gold to pure black and white.

      About Pablo

Pablo Peña was born in Weslaco and still works there. He has made stained glass, copper sculpture and jewelry, but one thing runs through all of it: color, chosen to match the mood he's in when he picks up the brush.

His paintings move between two worlds. One is surreal and cosmic, full of strange figures and symbols hidden in the landscape. The other is pure motion, with ribbons of paint that curl across the canvas. People who stand in front of them talk about the same thing: the color makes them feel something before they know why.
